Here is my story:

I used to view media as inherently BAD

I wasted many hours scrolling social media, especially late at night. It was a distraction that I used to numb my emotions which heightened my anxiety. I had viewed things in movies that left me feeling completely sick to my stomach because of the inappropriate content. I even considered getting rid of my smartphone.

I just wanted to avoid all media, but I knew this was impossible. I felt terrified by the idea of raising children in this world saturated with screen-time and offensive messages.

I got a job that opened my eyes to the GOOD that can come from media

I realized that social media, movies, smartphones, podcasts, websites, etc. actually provided so much good in my life. I learned about how to implement personal safeguards to ensure I was embracing the good and avoiding the bad.

I became fascinated with the idea of being mindful with my media-use. I read book after book about how media influences us, how to be more intentional, and how to help our children develop good media habits.

Media is now a tool that helps me thrive

My fascination with mindful media-use hasn't stopped. I am continuing to learn about all things media and how to embrace the good.

I feel confident in knowing how to avoid the destructive aspects of media. I feel purposeful as I am more intentional with my media-use. I feel excited and hopeful about helping my children learn to use media for good.

You are not alone if you have found yourself checking social media multiple times a day just because you are bored.

Sometimes it feels like there is nothing left to read, watch, or listen to that is appropriate.

It really can feel so intimidating thinking about bringing children into this world when media and its influence feels impossible to avoid.

But thankfully there really are so many amazing resources and answers for people like you and me that want to enjoy all of media’s benefits without letting it take over us and our children’s lives.
